Welcome to the Virtual Institute of Neurodegeneration & Ageing

The goal of the Virtual Institute of Neurodegeneration & Ageing is to position Germany at the forefront of international research in the field of neurodegeneration and ageing. Thus, the Virtual Institute of Neurodegeneration & Ageing focuses on a new interdisciplinary concept, which aims to achieve a better understanding of the pathogenic principles of neurodegenerative diseases via exploring their interaction with mechanisms of ageing in the Central Nervous System (CNS) in general. At the same time signalling pathways known to be involved in the onset and progression of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s Disease (AD and PD) will be investigated and novel concepts for counter-acting these diseases and for prolonged healthy lifestyle will be examined covering the entire range of basic science.

Research within the Virtual Institute of Neurodegeneration & Ageing benefits from the expansion of existing networks between the Helmholtz Zentrum München and Munich’s top level universities (LMU and TUM, both awarded “excellent” by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research ’s Excellence Initiative) which integrates the competencies and resources of the participating institutions in a cross-disciplinary and cross-institutional effort. The existing excellence of scientific know-how of the Helmholtz Zentrum München and the two leading universities of Munich will be linked and coordinated by the Helmholtz Center.

The Virtual Institute of Neurodegeneration & Ageing is funded by the Impulse & Networking Fund of the Helmholtz Association.
